Health Product Declarations (HPDs) are one type of transparency report to help your customer understand your commitment to healthy materials and sustainable chemistry. You can create HPDs using 3E Exchange and directly transfer data to the Health Product Declaration Collaborative's Builder. You can also export your data from the HPDC Builder to 3E Exchange.

Step 1: Start the HPD Workflow

You will start by selecting the button at the top of your screen that says "Create HPD". This will trigger the step-by-step workflow built into 3E Exchange.

Step 2: Import a New Product, or Select an Existing Product from your Library

If you are brand new to 3E Exchange, you might not have any data in your account. If you're a seasoned 3E Exchange user, you will certainly have data in your account. This workflow accommodates every type of user.

Import a New Product

If you're new to 3E Exchange, select "Import new Product". Follow the workflow steps to complete the import.

For more information on importing, read our general data import summary. If you have any questions, use the chat button on the bottom right-hand side of the screen to reach out to our team.

Select single existing Product in Library

If you already have a product imported into 3E Exchange and would like to use that to create your HPD, click " Select single existing Product in Library" to start the HPD workflow.

Select the Product you'd like to use to create your HPD from your list in the "Select Product/Materials" step.

Step 3: Review BOM

Once you've either imported your data OR selected an existing product, you will find yourself on the "Review BOM" Step of the workflow.

In this step, you will want to make sure your BOM is fulfilling the HPD requirements. This means you will need to have your Chemical Registry Numbers and Product % by Weight completed, accounting for all substances present above 100 or 1000 ppm.

HPDs also require data for the following fields:

  • Role (in all substance rows - AKA any row where you would find a CAS number)

  • Material Type (at highest level rows)

  • Nanomaterial

  • Notes (required if something is marked as proprietary)

Once you've confirmed that your BOM is correct and complete, select the arrow to move on to the next step in the workflow. For more information on required fields, visit the HPD Manufacturer's Guide and the HPD Open Standard.

If you need to change your Reporting Options for your HPD (i.e. obscure ranges, change the column to reference for material names, etc.) visit this help article that walks through our new and improved Setting page: 3E Exchange System-Wide Settings.

Step 4: Complete Manufacturer Information and HPD-Specific Fields

In the "General Info" and "Edit HPD Fields" page, you will need to fill out the information about your company as well as specific required fields for HPD.

On the "General Info" page, Manufacturer Name and Description are required. It is recommended that you fill out the other information on this page to the best of your ability. Any required information not completed on 3E Exchange will need to be added in the builder later.

On the "Edit HPD Fields" page, there are more required fields specifically designed and chosen by the team at HPD. For more information on required fields and the expectations for these fields, visit the HPD Manufacturer's Guide and the HPD Open Standard. Any required information not completed on 3E Exchange will need to be added in the builder later.

Substance Notes can be added in the Notes column of your substances. Notes will automatically be combined for rows with the same substance.

Proprietary Data is included in the HPD report as "Undisclosed" for both the substance name and CASRN.

Once you've completed this step, click the next button to move forward. You will have three HPD options to choose from:

  • The Nested Material Inventory reports order substances by your level-one materials, and differ in how the threshold for substance inclusion is determined.

  • The Basic Inventory report simply orders all substances by product and does not consider materials.

This HPDC page has more information on these different types of reports: Basic vs. Nested content inventory. Select the option that best suits you and select "OK" to move on.

Step 5: Preview & Export

In this step you can see how all of your data has been pulled into the HPD report. Here you can also publish to Origin and Export your HPD. Your HPD has not been published to the HPD Builder at this point, so any exported HPDs would be best used for record-keeping or QA purposes.

Step 6: Submit to HPD Builder

Once you're satisfied with the data you've entered and would like to transfer that to the HPD Builder, move on to the "Submit to HPD Builder" step in the HPD workflow.

Once you've successfully transferred the data to the builder, you will see this confirmation:

Select the button that says "Click Here to Visit the HPD Builder Site and View Your Data". Once you're in the HPD Builder, follow their workflow to review your data and formally submit your HPD for publishing.
