Recycled Content and Scrap Rate Auto-Calculations

3E Exchange can automatically calculate the overall recycled content of your products based on the recycled content of your materials.

Overview

Recycled content consists of "Pre-Consumer Recycled Content", "Post-Consumer Recycled Content", and an overall "Recycled Content" which is the sum of those values. There is also a field for "Scrap Rate" and "Recyclable." In 3E Exchange you will find columns for each of these fields.

Your products may contain several materials, each with their own responses for if they are or are not recyclable along with recycled content and scrap rate. Based on the amount of each material in your finished product, 3E Exchange can calculate the recycled content and scrap rate totals for your product.

In the example above, the product-level recycled content and scrap rate values are determined by the values of each material relative to the percentage of that material in the product (Product % by Weight).

Setup

To begin calculating product-level recycled content and scrap rate, there are a few settings to enable. In "Settings" in the navigation bar, make sure these settings are turned on:

  1. Enable "Show Summary Row" to see the top-level row in all of your products and materials. Since your overall recycled content and scrap rate is getting calculated, it will be automatically displayed in this product/material-level row.

  2. Enable "Calculate Summary-level Recycled Content Fields" to instruct 3E Exchange that your products'/materials'/ recycled content should be calculated based on their materials.

  3. Enable "Calculate Summary-level Recyclable Fields" to instruct 3E Exchange that your products'/materials'/ recyclable data should be calculated based on their materials.

  4. Enable "Calculate Summary-level Scrap Rate" to instruct 3E Exchange that your products'/materials' scrap rate should be calculated based on their materials.

These are considered Global Settings and turning them on will enable these settings for all of your products and materials. If you leave the "Recycled Content," "Recyclable Data," and "Scrap Rate" settings off for your overall library, you can still choose to override these settings for individual products and materials.

To change the settings for individual products and materials, you will select "Product Settings" in the BOM view. You will the turn "Recycled Content," "Recyclable Data," and "Scrap Rate" "On - Calculate Summary-level Recycled Content Fields" for that product/material and override the Global Setting.

This is what the drop-down options will look like for each setting:

If you don't see the columns Recycled Content, Pre-consumer Recycled Content, Post-consumer Recycled Content, or Scrap Rate visit Setting up your BOM Fields to learn about configuring your row data columns.

Calculations

  • The total recycled content of a row is determined by the value in the Recycled Content column or the value of Pre- + Post-Consumer Recycled Contents. If you only have Recycled Content, all calculations will work as expected.

  • The total recycled content of a product is determined by (Material-1 Product % * Material-1 Recycled Content + .... + Material-N Product % * Material-N Recycled Content).

  • The total scrap rate of a product is determined by (Material-1 Product % * Material-1 Scrap Rate + .... + Material-N Product % * Material-N Scrap Rate).

Tips

  • If you don't see calculations but have entered recycled content/scrap rate for your materials, make sure your materials have a value for Product % by Weight. Without this value, 3E Exchange doesn't know how much of the material is in the finished product and ignores the row for calculations.
